In celebration of the GHD, Manila Water Foundation (MWF), the social development arm of the Manila Water enterprise in the Philippines, emphasizes the importance of proper handwashing with clean water and soap during critical times. This is line with the company’s banner campaign “Health in Our Hands.”
The main event was held at Mariano Marcos Memorial High School (MMMHS) in Sta. Ana, Manila. The event was divided into two: Morning and afternoon programmes.
Highlights of the morning programme include the hygiene kit distribution from Cleene, ceremonial handwashing and pledge with participants, handwashing lecture, and the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the 10-faucet hygiene facility. Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna also graced the event. GHD 2019 ambassador, Robi Domingo also shared an inspirational message and call-to-action about the proper handwashing. Partners from the private and government sectors also joined the celebration.
In addition to the celebration, a ten-faucet hygiene facility was also turned over during the event. Manila Water Foundation and its present key stakeholders led a ribbon-cutting ceremony to formalize the inauguration of the facility.
In the afternoon, a medical mission from FamilyDoc, and storytelling about proper hygiene from Adarna House was held. To emphasize the importance of proper handwashing before food preparation, a cooking demo led by teachers of the host school was also conducted. Lastly, kids joined the event through a poster making contest about the theme of the celebration, “Clean Hands for All.”
Since 2013, Manila Water Foundation has been one of the most visible and active proponents of the GHD in the Philippines because part of its core advocacy is hygiene education. This year, true to the theme “Clean Hands for All,” Manila Water Foundation extended its celebration of GHD to its partner communities. Last October 4, Manila Water Foundation organized a kick-off event at Sitio Monicayo, an Aeta community in Mabalacat, where the community participated in the ceremonial handwashing, storytelling activity from Adarna House, hygiene kit distribution from Cleene, and medical mission with the Rural Health Unit Region III.
Manila Water Foundation will be closing the month-long celebration of GHD in another Aeta community at Barangay Sapang Uwak in Porac, Pampanga. Manila Water Foundation is a member of the Global Handwashing Partnership which is a coalition of international stakeholders who advocate on hygiene as a pillar for development.
