George Tizon, a sixth-grader from Ricardo P. Cruz, Sr. Elementary School, noticed that some of his classmates incurred absences over the past weeks due to colds and flu. Little did George know that practicing proper hygiene practices can help him and his fellow pupils to combat these communicable diseases.
Linis Lusog Kabataan and Lingap Eskwela in Taguig City
To address this need, P&G Philippines, Manila Water Foundation, and Manila Water Taguig - Pateros Business Area worked together to bring hygiene facilities to three schools in Taguig City, namely Bagong Tanyag Elementary School, Ricardo P. Cruz Sr. Elementary School and Upper Bicutan Elementary School.
Each of the schools received a five-faucet facility and P20,000-worth of Safeguard and Ariel products. During the inauguration ceremony last October 3, pupils also learned the seven steps and the critical times for handwashing.
Dr. Erlinda Butcon, Principal of Bagong Tanyag Elementary School, shared that the additional facilities and items would help entice the students to practice good hygiene habits while in school, and hopefully lessening the spread of communicable diseases among pupils.
“Masayang masaya ako kasi maraming mga [health] cases kami ngayon na—sabi nga ng physicians—isa sa mga dahilan ay ang hindi pagsunod sa tamang hygiene. Sa pagkakaroon ng ganitong facilty sa school namin, talaga namang maipa-practice ng ating mga kabataan ang tamang steps sa paghuhugas ng kanilang kamay. (I am very happy because there are a lot of health cases these days--as said by the physicians--which resulted from the lack of proper hygiene practices. Having these kinds of facilities is essential so our pupils can practice their hygiene habits.)”
To George, learning proper hygiene practices such as handwashing and toothbrushing will not only prevent communicable diseases, but also improve the quality of student life. "Mahalaga po sa aming kalusugan ang kalinisan [sa katawan]. Nakakatulong po ito at nakapagbibigay nang lakas para makapag-aral pa kami nang mabuti. (Proper hygiene is important to our health. This will help strengthen us, so we can perform better at school.)”
Manila Water Foundation's Lingap Eskwela program aims to provide water access through drinking or hygiene facilities in schools. Meanwhile, P&G’s Linis Lusog Kabataan aims to teach good hygiene habits to school children and mothers.
